Lobeiras - Galicia, North West Spain

Galicia is “hidden” Spain – Celtic in origin, blessed with stunning scenery, a rugged coastline and ancient buildings. So, there’s lots to see and do. The area’s charm is that it is relatively unknown and still undiscovered.

Things to do in and around Lobeiras

The Sea

There are so many fantastic sandy beaches within an easy reach that it’s difficult to name them all - but Playas de Miño, Perbes, Insua, Ber, Sada are the nearest. For those who prefer to be more active there is wonderful surfing with internationally renowned waves at Pantin and courses for beginners upwards at Valdoviño.
Also, marinas and harbours such as Sada, Ares and Redes offer kayaking, sailing courses, boat hire and sea fishing. Galicia is known as the land of a 1,000 rivers and most flow into beautiful secluded inlets on the Atlantic coast. The rocky coastline and remote bays of Finisterre are well worth a trip.

Historic towns

All the towns have wonderful squares where you can pause for a leisurely break in cafes and watch life go by, as well as discovering the charms and hidden architectural gems of the back streets. Perhaps Galicia’s two most famous towns are A Coruña - 35 minutes away with the amazing Maria Pita square, the ancient citadel and the world’s oldest working lighthouse, and Santiago de Compostela which is an easy one hour’s drive by motorway. The latter’s extraordinary cathedral is the destination for those pilgrims who have walked the Camino. Much nearer are the Medieval towns of Pontedeume and Betanzos with old churches, lively markets and good restaurants .

Wild Places

Galicia has many wild and remote places that are well worth exploring. Very close to Casa Lucinda is the amazing natural park of Fragas Do Eume - one of the best conserved forests and moorlands in Europe - great for walking, cycling, swimming, kayaking, horse riding and birdwatching. It’s full of wildlife and rare species. At its heart is the Eume river which is famous for salmon fishing. Most of Galicia’s rivers are full of trout and can be fished once the correct licences are obtained. There are lots of stunning woodland and coastal walks and bike rides. The north coast of Galicia, around the Cabo Ortegal, has some very dramatic cliffs and hills with wild ponies.

Culture

There is much to see and do in Galicia. A Coruña has a world renowned orchestra, Sinfónica de Galicia, and also a small Picasso Museum. Adjoining Santiago’s remarkable cathedral is an associated Museum. Just down the road from our Casa is the old monastery of Monfero with its amazing chequerboard front. The isolated 9thC monastery of Caaveiro can be reached by a beautiful woodland walk or bike ride alongside the gin-clear river Eume or, for the less energetic, by bus. The old naval port of Ferrol is worth a visit with its maritime museum and two Napoleonic forts guarding its harbour. Most villages have a fiesta every year, and some have music festivals featuring traditional instruments.

Food and drink

As the main Spanish fishing fleets are based in Galicia, the predominant local food comes from the sea. Thus there is always an abundant variety of fresh fish and shellfish available in local markets and supermarkets. Galician beef is very delicious and beginning to gain an international reputation well beyond its borders. Pork is another traditional staple. The land is fertile and so many vegetables are local. Spain is already well known for the quality of its wine and more recently Galician wines - such as Albariño - are making their mark. Restaurants cater for all levels - from the gastronome to those who prefer wholesome and simple.

Getting to Casa Lucinda

For the international traveller there are many ways of getting to us. Spain is well served with motorways.
